Elvis and The Pickups , Athens, Georgia , April 27 2005

Just got back from Athens. I didn't write down the setlist, so that
will
have to wait for more responsible listers. The show seemed pretty close
to
the reports for previous Pickup shows. It was just under 2 hours. David
Hidalgo sang lead on two songs, but I don't really know any Los Lobos
or
Hidalgo songs, so I don't know what they were.

After the show, I did run down to the stage door. Just saw Davey
getting on
the bus, others told me Pete had already come out. We waiting awhile
and
David Hidalgo came out. Several of his fans crowded around, so I didn't
try
and talk to him to say thanks for stepping in. Then about 5 minutes
later
the bus left. A roadie said that Elvis had already left, but we waited
around another 15 or 20 minutes just to be sure and no sign of him. :(

The audience was much better than I feared for a college town. Down
front
where I was, there were mostly other people in their 40s. There was
much
dancing and I think the entire orchestra section stood through the last
4 or
5 songs.

It was a good show,
but my
husband really missed Steve. He was reluctant to go because he is a
huge
Steve fan, but I wanted to see how things went without Steve.

Oh, and Sondre Lerche is adorable. He did very well in getting a big
sound
out of just his guitar and I was impressed. He also just decided he
wanted
to sing "Moonlight Becomes You" but he didn't know how to play it on
guitar
so he sang acapella. He said that the Bing Crosby version was the best
and
we should go look for it, but he just felt like singing it there. It
was great.

Steve responds -

The cheeky monkey! He's been just deciding
to sing it acapella since the show in Spokane :-)
As Rod Stewart sang, "her ad lib lines were
well-rehearsed."

I responded -

He also did it - beautifully - at the show he
did in Dublin on Feb.25th.

Lerche fans haven't been kind about
Costello fans on his forum - here are some comments on
last nights show -

' yes sondre was amazing last night and another
thing that sucked was us not being allowed to have
cameras there...poo...but he was so great just him and
his guitar and the red shoes were very hot. and i just
loved him twirling his foot around while he was
singing..mmm...my cousin and i didn't stay for
costello though, the people were way to weird
...sondre you're woderful!'

' Everyone in the audience was stinky. Literally. '

I don't know about stinky, but the crowd in New York was incredibly rude to Sondre Lerche IMHO.

It's tough opening for EC. You always get your fair share of drunken louts. They're the same ones shouting during "The Scarlet Tide".

Elvis Costello performs for a near sell out crowd at the Classic Center Theatre Wednesday evening. Costello performed along with the Pickups -- Davey Faragher, Pete Thomas and David Kildago. This was Costello's first time in Athens.

Memories of when Elvis performed with a lineup without Steve.

On that occasion Steve was busy in London finishing the recording of his album Welcome To The Voice.
