Elvis Costello wrote:Sad to receive the news of Terry Hall’s passing last night from Lynval Golding. Terry’s voice was the perfect instrument for the true and necessary songs on “The Specials”. That honesty is heard in so many of his songs in joy and sorrow. My condolences to his family and friends.

I can’t find a crying emoji.

This is a real shock.

I absolutely loved him and the whole 2 Tone movement meant a lot to me.

I tried to copy his dark humour and miserable image. Unfortunately it didn’t work when I was 17 but it’s starting to work now.
Who’s this kid with his mumbo jumbo?

I loved the whole ska revival and went to see the 2 Tone tour in Leicester. The bill was the Specials, Madness and Selecter.
An amazing gig and I managed to sneak backstage afterwards. We were welcomed like long lost mates into a big room were all the bands were having a party. It was a great night and one I always look back on. I saw the Specials many times but last year I saw them in Coventry, a home town gig. The crowd were up for it but there was a definite spark missing on stage. I‘ve read it was just after that, that Terry took ill. Such sad news. He was a very funny, talented guy.
This is photo from that night in Leicester. It would have been late 1979

Interesting too how EC’s love for the Specials resurfaced hugely in his work with Roots, so much so that Ghosttown was an obvious and delightful cover for them to do.
