Preservation Hall Jazz Band Taps Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello for Livestream Benefit
Beck, Dave Matthews, Jim James, and others are also set to perform
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band has enlisted Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello and others for “‘Round Midnight Preserves,” a livestream benefit concert set for June 20th.
Hosted by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s Ben Jaffe and directed by photographer Danny Clinch, the event will feature live performances as well as archived performances and interviews. Beck, Dave Matthews, Jim James, Nathaniel Rateliff, Irma Thomas, Jon Batiste, PJ Morton are also featured on the lineup.
The concert was inspired by the “Midnight Preserves” series at the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, created by Jaffe in 2012. “Every year we look forward to Midnight Preserves as a way to connect with our fans and old friends,” Jaffe said in a statement. “Just about everyone I’m friends with today I’ve met through music or a musical collaboration that came out of Midnight Preserves. It’s a blessing to have met so many incredible humans and to have shared our stage and their stage.”
The concert will stream on the Preservation Hall Foundation’s website at 9 pm E.T., as well as on YouTube, Facebook and Twitch. Virtual admission is free, but Spotify will match donations up to $10 million towards its COVID-19 Music Relief fund. A live auction will also be held, offering four tickets to shows by the featured artists as well as seats to the Preservation Hall in New Orleans.

Unseen Performances From Dave Grohl, Irma Thomas, Elvis Costello, Dave Matthews, Beck And More To Raise Funds For Preservation Hall Foundation
Ben Jaffe, bassist for the Preservation Hall Jazz band and photographer/video director Danny Clinch have assembled a roster of acclaimed musicians for ‘Round Midnight Preserves, a free virtual streaming event this Saturday June 20 at 9 pm EST/ 8 pm CST, with proceeds benefiting the Preservation Hall Foundation.
The three-hour broadcast features unique, one-off musical performances and collaborations from Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello, Irma Thomas, Dave Matthews, Beck, Jon Batiste, Jim James, PJ Morton, Nathaniel Rateliff and more. The ‘Round Midnight Preserves began in 2012 following the annual New Orleans Jazz Fest, and Saturday’s broadcast culls from those performances.
Both Jaffe, the Hall’s Creative Director, and Clinch, who has photographed many of the performers, along with special guests, will offer commentary during the livestream.
New Orleans holds a special place in many musicians’ hearts, with its unique blend of Creole, jazz, blues and rock rhythms. Funds raised during the program will benefit the Preservation Hall Foundation and the sixty musicians who make up the Preservation Hall Musical Collective. The members of the Musical Collective serve as mentors, teaching artists and tradition bearers for locals.
Spotify is matching all donations to help us provide support and resources to the members of our Collective. Through its COVID-19 Music Relief initiative, Spotify has pledged to match up to $10 million in donations to its nonprofit partners around the world.

It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think that you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt

With it being called "Round Midnight Preserves", I was expecting more of a jam session.

Watch Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello, & More Perform For Preservation Hall Benefit Livestream
Last night, the New Orleans institution Preservation Hall held a livestream benefit show for the the Preservation Hall Foundation and the musicians of Preservation Hall. It was a mix of pre-recorded performances and new material. The big finale was a performance by Paul McCartney and Irma Thomas doing “When The Saints Go Marching In.” They were joined by a number of musician friends, including Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello, and many more.
Both Grohl and Costello had their own performances throughout the three-and-half hour event. They popped up a few different times to talk with Ben Jaffe, the creative director of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Grohl performed a socially-distanced rendition of “Come With Me” with Charlie Gabriel — the two of them previously performed it together in 2018 — and he also did a solo acoustic version of Foo Fighters’ “Best Of You.” Those happen at the 1hr24m and 3hr42m mark respectively in the livestream video.
Costello did the title track from his 2006 album “The River In Reverse,” his Grammy-nominated collaboration with Allen Toussaint. Costello also introduced My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, who performed his Circuital track “Wonderful (The Way I Feel).” Those happen around the 2hr25m mark and the 2hr58m mark.
Arcade Fire also shared a new video of them doing “Wake Up” with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band that was recorded at Karnaval 2020, which was partially shot by Spike Jonze. That’s at the 3hr33m mark.
The livestream also had appearances from Amy Schumer, Jude Law, Dave Matthews, Nathaniel Rateliff, Jon Batiste, and quite a few more.
You have to click through to Facebook to watch the entire livestream, but you can watch the McCartney and Thomas performance on its own below.
