Re: What are you listening to right now?
The reference I would give it is Beach Boys- for the reason that all the bandmembers have great voices and they can use them. This album mirrors for me some of that bands more adventurous vocal efforts. The texture of the voices together is intoxicating and it stays in my ears long after the record ...

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Grizzly Bear- VECKATMEST-I am sucked in right from the start-"Southern Point" and it only gets stronger with "Two Weeks" and the remainder of the album- sonic choral riffs with gorgeous harmonic interplay from all band mates-do not know about CS&N- this is way more adventurou...

Re: EC to release Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
Have had the chance to listen to this album pretty much completely over the last three days-picked it up for the nice price of $9.98. I cannot say I share your growing enthusiasm for the material. It is professionally played, the vibrato is tamed, but it is strangely soulless. It is almost a genre a...

Re: EC to release Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
Have heard numerous cuts on the local sudent radio station WFUV-what excites me right now is the ability to work in a local reference- the city of Poughkeepsie- into a song- "From Sulfur to Sugar Cane"-that has my ears piqued at this time- general feel- this will not be a big seller-just p...

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Have found an old album from 30 years ago- only recently made available in the US- Herbie Hancock's The Piano- Piano improvisations created on the spot as this was one of the first albums done to use Direct to disc recording. He reexplores some songs associated with Miles Davis on one side and then ...

It is early, but I am game: Bob Dylan - Though Life together John Doe & The Sadies- Country Club Mark Olson & Garyl Louris- Ready for the Flood Neko Case - Middle Cyclone The Dylan and John Doe albums have continued to grow on me and every week I manage to play the other two- would give an h...

Re: What are you listening to right now?
This week it is "Country Club" by John Doe and the Sadies-picked it up recently in Newbury Comics in Boston. This is just one fun country and western album- John Doe sings his heart out on old classic Nashville songs and is amiably backed by The Sadies-this is not the treacle that passes f...

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Tinted Windows---this is a guilty pleasure like a candy bar off the side- lots of sugar and a quick rush- not certain if it is going to sustain me over time-but I sure like the immediate impact. Interesting combination too!-- Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne, James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins...
Re: new Dylan
Well Otis- you know the "country doctor" rambles and "banker's neices seek perfection" or perhaps I should say workers compensation clerks. Just playing.
Re: new Dylan
Have been consistently "listening" to this album since Tuesday. I do not find it a "disappointment". I am drawn to that baseball adage- to be a success you need to fail 7 out of 10 times. Though not on the level of the recent Time Out of Mind or Love & Theft, it merits close ...

Re: dylan, on songwriters and more
Alex, I would have to concur with your thoughts-I think you are on to something. I too saw him recently in CT on a bill with EC- the acoustics, Dylan's particular lack of enthusiasm that evening were a turn off- I too have sworn off for the moment seeing him live anytime soon-probably to my detrimen...

Re: Record Store Day - April 18, 2009
I would just add- buy anything. Too many people steal their music- hurting the economy, the artist and their local business owner. It still is a pleasurable experience for me to browse in my local store- Rhino Records- and stumble on some treasure. I will be there today as I frequently am and I will...

Re: books, books, books
As I ease into an exceedingly sedentary mid-fifties I am taking extra comfort in armchair travels. An excellant companion the last few weeks has been Redmond O'Hanlon as he labors into Borneo or plunges down the Orinoco in Venezuela. Both books, Into the Heart of Borneo and In Trouble Again, provide...

Re: What are you listening to right now?
I have been re-listening to Cassandra Wilson, of late. Particularly Belly of the Sun and New Moon Daughter. Like the back woods feel with all the earthiness in her voice and the way she sings behind the beat. The choice of some old pop staples the The Weight and Love is Blindness has always struck m...

Re: Marianne Faithfull @ Letterman Show on March 31, 2009
Thank you for the welcome, Alex. As a previous observer of this site, I have noted a distinct interest by members in the recent TV program Spectacle , featuring the star of this site. One of the highlights of the past season was the program which featured Rufus Wainwright as his guest. If one indulg...

Re: Marianne Faithfull @ Letterman Show on March 31, 2009
I am a new member to your community but have read with curiosity over the years from the sidelines. Though not a "big" fan of Marianne Faithful I will admit to owning and playing several of her albums in the past. I fully comprehend that this is a site primarily devoted to Elvis Costello h...
