Mega dittos Noise! Rush is just proving that if you spew enough bullshit, sooner or later you'll step in it.

I saw REM live last week (with Sparklehorse) and they were absolutely outstanding. Michael Stipe was very chatty and engaging and they just seemed like they were having a lot of fun. By the way, REM only filled 2/3 of the venue last week, and Radiohead filled it to the brim last night (another good ...

Because Elvis is going to be spending time in Canada, we can only fervently pray for a Loverboy collaboration, as well as Elvis' attempt at producing long lost Canadian wonders Chilliwack.

Thanks everyone! A lot of you pointed out stuff I had lined up but I also was reminded of some that I had forgotten and some I was unaware of. I'll keep you posted on how this goes. I'm also writing a proposal for a music appreciation type class to offer as an elective for next year, so I may be bac...

Music and Politics

Hey everyone- I teach an Advanced Placement Civics course for 12th grade girls and I've decided to do a unit on popular music and politics- everything from answering the questions about which comes first, the music or the movement, to addressing how rock and roll has been co-opted by politicians and...

I like Simon and Garfunkel. I think their stuff was the epitome of that sensitive-nerdy-guy-in-a-black-turtleneck-who-didn't-understand-why-the-jocks-got-the-girls kind of guy. Plus Paul Simon has managed to show a vivid self-deprecating sort of wit, especially on SNL. Besides, whether anyone thinks...

The churchy organ in Clowntime No. 2 really makes it for me. A song that is already vaguely ominous becomes more so when slowed down. I don't really have a great interpretation for this song, but it seems to be about the ending of innocence. From what I've seen, most people kinda like this version b...

Since there seems to be some interest, I'll post the track listing for the Kinks tribute CD. It was released on Ryko last year. I definitely stand corrected- for some reason I thought MH was from 68. Regardless, its great, and rather than go to Haggard and the Louvins for inspiration, Ray seems to have pulled it out of himself; i.e. put an English spin on being a hillbilly. Cause I'm a Muswell Hillbilly boy I wish I was in W...

Blue Chair- Muswell Hillbillies is an essential Kinks release. The Kinks predated just about every trend that would eventually come down the pike, and Muswell Hillbillies is their excellent stab at country music (before the Byrds and Stones really went there). For the later stuff, I truly feel that ...

Just picked up This is Where I Belong: The Songs of Ray Davies and the Kinks. It's probably the best tribute album I've heard. Standouts are Ron Sexsmith's This is Where I Belong , Steve Forbert's Starstruck , Fountains of Wayne's Better Days and Ray and Damon Albarn doing a live version of Waterloo...

Looking for Lost Elvis Fans

This might be impossible, but just in case: Back on the Mighty Like a Rose tour my friend Robin and I drove from Spokane, WA to Berkeley to see EC and the Rude 5 at the Greek. We were some of the first people in line and met several other fans whom we ended up sitting with. We met a couple named Kev...

Great Perspective Builders

The death of my friend last spring and the subsequent death of one of my students (in a one car auto accident the day before school started) have given me a couple of intense perspective/reality checks this year. I have thought a lot about this and I want to ask the forum the following questions: * ...

My girlfriend just got back from Ireland, so I wanted to make her a CD of Irish and Irish-friendly artists. I got out Bespoke songs and put Christy Moore's 'Deportee' and Ronnie Drew's 'Dirty Rotten Shame'- two brilliant songs off this great compilation.

Y'all are dull and predictable for once....not something I usually associate with this crowd:

J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.)
Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo (Sonic Youth)
Paul Westerberg
Jamie Nebel (The Makers)
Willie Nelson

So There.
