Re: Recently viewed films
It's interesting you should say that because I listened to an interview with them on NPR's "Fresh Air" and they said they hadn't even seen the earlier film. . I guess thats possible. I think they also said they wanted to be true to the book. I haven't read the book . . but it could be tha...

Re: Elvis Costello retires from making albums....
This is just Elvis pouting. We've heard it before. He is such a fan of the album format . . . and a purist at that . . . right down to pressing them on VINYL. Are we really supposed to believe that NR was his last album? I would be shocked if he goes more than 18 months without making another album....

Re: Recently viewed films
I felt a little let down by the Coen's True Grit. Maybe because I had seen the original just recently and remembered it so fondly from years ago when I first saw it. But I think the true source of my disappointment was that I was expecting a little more Coen spin. I think this version hardly breaks ...

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2
6. Church Underground - could've been on Spike. ?? Is that a bad thing? You mean it could've been on the same album as Deep Dark Truthful Mirror, God's Comic, Veronica and Pads Paws and Claws? No, its not a bad thing, but you have to admit it sounds like it was taken right from Spike. Those are all...

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2
Secret, Profane, and Sugarcane is much more listenable. Lets take apart NR track by track: 1. National Ransom - "shake down, shake down, shake down". Blech! 2. Jimmie Standing in the Rain - great song, sleepy vocals, I like it. 3. Stations of the Cross - another great song. Can't imagine t...

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2
Okay, I'm going to say it. NR is his worst album since Il Sogno and is right up there with Goodbye Cruel and Punch the Clock as his worst. Its in the bottom 3 or 4 anyway. Stuart Duncan's low-volume, mumbling harmonizing gets annoying in a hurry. Its like he is the sideler from Seinfeld, whoa, he's ...

Re: The Gibson Interview: Elvis Costello, Dec. '10
Great post, AlexV. You had me agreeing mostly up until the part about all the NR praise. I'm afraid its just not that good. 1/3rd of the songs are strong to average, the rest are completely skippable. Maybe the .99 cent iTunes format suits Elvis best and he doesn't even know it yet!

Re: The Gibson Interview: Elvis Costello, Dec. '10
I don't take that as crying poverty at all. I take it as, I'm not going to invest in a losing proposition. Simple as that. Elvis does plenty of charity work and for that I applaud his efforts, but I don't think he files his business taxes as a not-for-profit corporation.

Re: The Gibson Interview: Elvis Costello, Dec. '10
Thats a bit harsh. All he said was there is no money in making "albums" as we used to know them anymore, and why spend his own money to do so until something gives in the record industry. I can't say I blame him. Elvis net worth @ $60 million is absurd. Where do they come up with this stuf...

Re: Elvis doing corporate gig, NY, Dec. 16 '10
Good post, AlexV. I mostly agree. I find it also sort've curious how the event is hyped as "featuring Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Elvis Costello". While that Hall of Fame "spectacle" has been a couple years ago already, its still fresh in my mind how Elvis decided it would be &q...

Re: Recently viewed films
Watched "Winter's Bone" the night before last. Had too high of expectations going in I guess. Yes, the girl did an amazing performance, but she reminded me a little of Renee Zellweger for some reason. Still, the story wasn't as good as I thought it would be and the whole movie left me flat...

Re: NR--Billboard Chart Placement?
For me, its just good, not a masterpiece EC work by any stretch. For the masses, no, this isn't going to be wildly popular no matter how hard it was advertised or promoted. There are some very good tracks, but unless you are already a fan of his work -- none of these would play well on the radio or ...

Got my CD today finally via amazon.com
I've given it a couple spins and can't say that I'm fond of it. Kinda bummed. I'll give it more time, but nothing stands out and grabs me. Anyone else have a similar letdown?

I guess I'm an old fogey. I don't know FLAC from wav or mp3. Digital cameras are another thing that makes me crazy. This isn't progress folks. Its more hassle and it sucks. Digital food is next. Re: NR--Billboard Chart Placement?
I went to try and purchase NR at 2 different Borders locations over the last 2 days. Neither of them had it, but many copies of the latest Josh Groban butchering some Christmas songs. And I'll be damned if I have to buy NR in mp3 format or have to wait a week for it to be shipped to me from s...

Re: T Bone Burnett's Revue /Elvis in Boston, NY, Oct. 16/20
I've got tickets to see Nick Lowe and Graham Parker in Boston for the 15th. If Elvis is in Boston on the 16th, maybe he'll drop in for a performance with Nick and Graham the night before.
