Re: New Year's Resolutions for EC

If you check the ASCAP site (https://www.ascap.com/Home/ace-title-search/index.aspx), there are a handful of titles since 'Sparkling Day' that have been registered. I'm sure a few of them are for TV shows or whatever, but here's what's new to me: Am I Laying Tinder At My Own Stake? For More Tears Gi...

Re: Does anyone besides myself miss Bruce Thomas' bass work

An ungracious 'joke' from Bruce Thomas. It's a pity his personality doesn't match his superb bass playing. I actually laughed out loud once I linked to the photo. It's a funny joke! Dave Same here – I didn't take it personally (mostly because I never saw the Attractions) but I thought it was funny....

Agreed with this – the '83 Rockpalast show is especially blazing, with Bruce Thomas putting his already astounding studio version histrionics to shame.

Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.

Interesting that Elvis (or whoever Right Reverend Jimmy Quickly is) has effectively denounced the exorbitant price of the box set: Steal This Record A Pastoral Address From The Right Reverend Jimmy Quickly There was a time when the release of a new title by your favourite record artist was a cause f...

Re: Elvis to guest star on Sesame Street

Is this EC's first music video since 'Monkey to Man'? I thought he did ones for 'Down Among The Wine And Spirits' and 'Sulphur To Sugarcane'. (Well, not music videos in the strictest sense of miming along to the studio recording, but he did solo acoustic performances of two songs from Secret, Profa...

Re: 'Sparkling Day' by Elvis on soundtrack for 'One Day' Aug

A light, fluffy film. It's about - mostly - vacuous, insubstantial people so it's hard to care about them. Being very much the Dexter story (like the book) it's reassuring to see that the Emma role is underplayed like it is, not that the casual viewer would know, given the hype that Hathaway's invo...

Re: Elvis and the Imposters, Ottawa Jazz Fest June 24, 2011

I did some digging and saw that the reporter thought that "National Ransom" was called "The Future Lies Ahead", based on a posting in the Yellow Press section of EC's site. How's that for research??

Re: Elvis/Imposters play Tower Theatre, Upper Darby 19 May 2

slobin's write-up was perfect, I don't think I could add anything to it. The jackass who shouted before 'Jimmie' definitely got a few "shut the fuck up"s, and he was two or three rows behind me, so I could hear him muttering angrily to himself the entire song. "This fucking new song,&...

Re: Big Boys and the Guy Coughing

I doubt it, it just sounds like Elvis coughed during the backing vocals and nobody heard it. Maybe just one of those things that slip in; Nick Cave is coughing like a maniac throughout 'Babe I'm On Fire', and the only deeper meaning was that his throat was shot.

John, you are right to point out some of the clumsy syntax it falls that way on my ear as well but the opening portion on the inner sleeve is quite poignant- On Paul Simon's So Beautiful or So What "How do the fingers of this thing entwine? Which foot falls first upon the trail? Is it the word...

Re: In praise of Momofuku

When this album came out, I was living on my own for the first time – I had just bought a house, and I was 24 years old. (I commuted to and from school, and saved up!) I was making decent money, and when I saw that EC was releasing Momofuku as a vinyl-only release, I decided now was the time to get ...

Re: 1987 Bruce Thomas Interview

I'm with Jeremy and others who didn't take it as a racial slur. My mind immediately went to "monkey suit", for some reason, and it seemed pretty innocent and tame. I'm as liberal as they come, and equating "monkey music" to a racist slur was the last thing on my mind, though I gu...
