Re: "Get Happy" Thirty Years Strong

While I slightly prefer his first 3 records, esp. TYM, I agree GH is a great album. The word play is obtuse yet concise.. brilliant. And great description of the "demented ice rink organ", I thouhgt of the opening riff from The Imposter immediately. Speaking of that song, until I saw the l...

Re: Jimmie standing in the rain - guess at lyric

Nice job guys, you pulled a lot more out of it than I could have. I only listened to it once, but liked it very much, the imagery reminds me of his earlier style of writing. Good stuff, I will listen to it again with your thoughts in mind. I love it when Elvis remembers he's British :)!!!!

Re: elvis's lines that you like\dislike the most.

Good points Neil and Ypsilanti, I am with you 100% on his lyrical brilliance throughout the years. I do favor his earlier material, but probably more for the music than for the lyrics. What can I say, I love the weird, wonderful SOUND of the albums up through Trust. I'm sure those albums coinciding ...

Re: elvis's lines that you like\dislike the most.

He has so many great lines, hard to narrow it down. Just scanning through a list of songs, here are some that popped into my head. I'm sure there are plenty of others that I like just as much. Like: it's a breath you took too late, it's a death that's worse than fate escorted by his lovely nieces, f...

Re: Elvis and The Imposters, Rancho Mirage, CA, 10 July 2009

Agree with the comments above, Elvis was in great voice, loved the set list, the sound was terrific, and the venue is excellent. Another 20-30 min would have been perfect. My buddy and I ran down to the front for the encore, so only 2 songs was a letdown. (Warning: Long story below, let's call it di...

Re: Elvis and The Imposters, Rancho Mirage, CA, 10 July 2009

Rancho Mirage (Palm Springs) is a curious choice for EC. He's never played there it seems. It's an area noted mostly for retirees and gaysters, not that there's anything wrong with either :). Not only that, he's playing an Indian casino (his new Wayne Newton lounge act 'stash will fit in quite nicel...

Re: Elvis playing Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Oct. 5 '08

Sounds like a great event, wish I could have made it. Mr. Lowe is playing in San Diego tonight, did he or Elvis mention it? I am clinging to the wafer-thin hope that EC might make an appearance. Seems that he didn't even join NIck on stage this weekend though, eh? Any info would be much appreciated,...

Re: Elvis playing Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Oct. 08

Nick Lowe is playing San Diego the next day, 10/6. The ad says Nick Lowe and Special Guest... could it be??!! However, I just checked the website and Paul Cebar is listed as the opener, no mention of a Special Guest. http://www.bellyup.com/show/detail/16694 Not likely to see Elvis it seems, but if a...

I also dislike the forced "to the bridge" in the otherwise great Flutter and Wow.

Quiz question:
Name another song where EC uses similar wording, though in a more subtle manner. In fact, I never realized it until hearing this song just the other day.

Re: Momofuku Poll #2 - Whaddya think?

Well-said, Alexv. Yes, the Trust - MF comparison is silly, but the take home message I get is how differently his biggest fans grade the songs. Especially the Trust songs which one would think may have reached a general consensus by now. One person's classic is another person's throwaway. I guess th...

Re: Momofuku Poll #2 - Whaddya think?

Great points, Poor Deportee. I'm just happy MF has a little of the classic Elvis feel. He can never replicate the greatness of the first 4 IMO, not because he is incapable of writing such songs, but becuase they wouldn't be as groundbreaking and astonishing as they were in 1980. I do agree that BT i...

Re: Momofuku Poll #2 - Whaddya think?

I think it's a very good effort. He sounds, at least to a degree, like English Elvis again!!!! A good thing, IMO. Plus the organ is back; I love that sound in his songs. Bass is still too heavy, but not to the excess of WIWC and TDM. B+ at least, maybe even an A after more listens. Good work, Declan!

I couldn't pull the trigger either! Same kind of deal here in San Diego.... 225 for the "best" seats, 90 for middle, and 40 for lawn. I tried soon as they went on sale, the 2 best seats I could find were about 1/3 the way up, not super-close. The best $90 seats had only ablut 6,000 people ...

Ok, I gave a it a few days.... no one has yet pointed out this bit of revisionist history:

During the baseball playoffs the other night, a guy by the name of Oliver Perez was pitching for the New York Mets. A crowd shot (on national TV)showed a guy holding up a sign proclaiming he was part of "Oliver's Army".
