Re: Recently viewed films

Took my family to see "District 9" last night while all the girls were home-enjoyed this intelligent, well constructed fable. Not always a big fan of science fiction but this one is funny and smart at the same time- liked the way the narrative was told in real time mixing in newsreel foota...

Close-up the road a bit past Pete Seeger's house nestled at the foot of beautiful Mt. Beacon in the interesting burg of Beacon-mother and brother are in the old church yard down the street-like you, knew of Cold Spring but find it too yuppified for me-and the prices do reflect that- managed to find ...

Re: Elvis and Allen Toussaint on Piano Jazz

Having had a chance to digest the whole program now- very happy with the discussion-clearly these are two men who live for music and can express that life in intelligent sentences-the discussion of the importance of having a piano in the household and the influence it had for both of them as childre...

Re: Elvis and Allen Toussaint on Piano Jazz

This is a fun interview so far- intelligent conversation about good music-EC is definitely a good ambassador for all music-I have always liked his polymath ability to move among many genres and talk smartly about all of them.

Will be seeing Graham Parker in town[just five blocks from the house] on 9/25/2009- he is doing a solo show in town at the Howland Center-cannot pass this up-really enjoyed his country album from a few years back-but the more breaking news is the announcement of the release of the long rumored Bob D...

The cover is wonderful-I love the vivid neon effect with dayglow-one of my recent favorites-I have begun to feel that ATD is meant to be unreadable- like Finneagan's Wake-not for the faint of heart like me and only for the gluttons.

That song has such a delicious Cubano feel to it along with some tasty guitar work by Marc Ribot- I have it on my Japan import of the cd but unforturnately do not know how to transfer it to you-maybe my daughter can think of a way when she comes home this evening from work-I equally enjoy the other ...

A brief Pynchon update- he has broken onto the best seller list in the 8/23/09 Sunday book review for the Times-# 5- more importantly it appears he has posted his own soundtrack for songs mentioned or heard in the book on Amazon.com.

Was very pleased to read in this morning's Times book review section a review by Helen Vendler of a new Selected Poems by Wallace Stevens-ironically I have been revisiting my own on going relationship with Stevens-I keep his Collected Poems on my nite stand for regular refreshment-and have been much...

My aversion to "Inglorious Bastards" is the apparant making of a sympathetic nazi- I am going to have trouble working up an interest in this film-saw a small film last night with my wife at home- a rental- "The Great Buck Howard"- a small, delicate little comedy with John Malkovi...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Otis-I too share a deep disgust for anything smacking of facisim-from a personal moral bent and for the fact that my wife has lost family members to those thugs-Hannah Arendt and Karl Popper are right-it is the most invasive threat that came out of the 20th century-I have always hoped that Moz was j...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Have spent the last week revisiting, for my own 40th anniversary celebration, "Let it Bleed"- I never cease to be amazed at how well this album holds up-it never sounds dated- I was a soon to be high school freshman when I first played it- it seemed the coolest, sexiest and druggiest album...

Thank you for sharing-enjoyed the Lester Bang's quote in your banner-best of luck with the publisher search-it has got to be difficult to get through the door-at least you are trying.

Re: Elvis Costello fans I need your help!

Sorry for your loss-not to be presumptuous as I have no knowledge of your friend or his particular affinity for EC-I would offer "Almost Blue" as a suggestion-with the caveat that it may produce more tears than will already be flowing at your friend's funeral. Again, my condolences for you...

Re: Ah! to be a 'Complete Unknown'

Woke this morning to the early drive Djs on the local Woodstock station, WDST, discussing the run in with the 'Fuz' in Long Branch- seems speculation is that Dylan was looking for Spingsteen's childhood home- appears he has been on pilgrimedges of late to the childhood homes of musicians he admires-...

I am excited for this release-truly enjoyed both "The Ten Cent Plague" and "Positvely 4th Street"-both very well done and written in an engaging style-the right wing scare over comic books in the 50s and the Village scene of the early 60s with Dylan, Baez, the Farinas and Pynchon...

Otis-have not given up just needed the right chemical stimulation-about a third of the way through- like 'Doc" as a character but find a good bit of the dialogue so far very stilted-I soldier on-hope it was a great holiday- The "encyclopedia" looks like a definitive resource on all th...

I suppose it was a zealous neighborhood watcher- unused to an elderly individual attired in a natty "Nudie" suit strolling through the neighborhood-not an everyday occurance I assume-ah! the well dressed vagabond just strolling 'like a rolling stone'.

Ah! to be a 'Complete Unknown'

Had to chuckle at a small piece in today's Poughkeepsie Journal on the Nation and World page- appears a police officer on duty in Long Branch, NJ stopped a man observed walkiing in a local neighborhood on July 23rd-the 24 year old officer asked for id failing to observe that the man was Bob Dylan-wh...

Had not observed that but now that you have pointed it out could be a plausible near anagram-have had to put "Doc" down for the moment-not properly engaged-instead completed "Wittgenstein's Poker" by David Edmonds and John Eidinow-the apocryphal tale of a 10 minute meeting betwee...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Have been revisiting Teddy Thompson's "Upfront & Down Low"-I have now been listening for over 2 years to this record-it is that good example of an artist who successfully extends himself into a genre he is not noted for on a regular basis-on this record he channels George Jones and rev...
