Blimey, indeed! This sounds plain bizarre!
Though, that said, Steve opera looked dang strange, and that Fire at Nathan's Bar and Grill was nuts, too!
Actually, vivre la difference! Good luck to 'em!

Re: 1987 Bruce Thomas Interview
Absolutely right, guys - I did say "if" Steve said it. I don't know if I believe it, either - it seems so out of character. But whether it was Bruce being nasty and misquoting, or whether it was Steve making an ill-judged comment - I don't think a worldly person can say that phrase and not...

Re: 1987 Bruce Thomas Interview
I too am appalled if Steve said that. I just can't believe it of him. I totally believe the Ray Charles comment from Elvis was said to deliberately annoy - to be deliberately offensive, out of a cranky desire to be shocking (i.e. not expressing a genuine opinion). But the throwaway nature of this re...

Re: "North" Redux
I'll have to give North another listen, as I haven't for ages - and I haven't got it here at my parents', where I'm staying for the hols. I think You Turned To Me and I'm In The Mood Again are classics - beautiful. Also, the v Cole Porteresque 'Let Me Tell You About Her' is a great, self-deprecating...

Re: Suit Of Lights
Elvis said the song is inspired by seeing his dad singing his heart out in a working man's club, but the drunken masses just weren't listening - they were talking all the way through, etc. It must be tough to make your living as an entertainer at the more ordinary end of the scale, having to haul yo...

Totally should've been nominated for best Americana (what bizarre categories they have in the Grammies!). But it is sooooo Americana! Far more Americana than folk, in fact!

Re: SPECTACLE APOLLO 2 debut!
Blimey, no wonder Elvis got pissed off, if this is the picture he was on about in that email! That is an absolutely TERRIBLE bit of photoshopping! They've tried to make his portlier image from last year look thinner by airbrushing in some cheekbones. That really is bloody awful! Get a contemporary p...

Elvis has never been able to stand still - he always seems on edge. Only time he actually seems relaxed is when he's singing!

Not at all Ypsilanti - your post made me realise that I was reporting something that had been removed from the original blog because it contained material unintended for public scrutiny. I didn't think you were getting at me at all - just defending our hero! Good on you!

Oh God, I've no axe to grind over Elvis - I love the man! Just reporting what I read in that blog post. But, on reflection, I don't think it's good me commenting on something that can't be read first hand any more, so I'm removing my post. Sorry if it leaves this thread in nonsensical tatters!

Re: Spectacle season 2
Oh dear - never write something in an email that you wouldn't mind anyone else reading! Gulp!
Reading those blog entries, though - who's the actual guest on the show's taping? Mary Louise Parker is an actress, as far as I can make out. So who's the actual guest?

Re: Thea Gilmore covers ‘The St Stephens Day Murders’
Good version! Lyrics are articulated more clearly than Elvis's version. It reminds me that you could do a whole compilation CD called Party Party - Godawful family get-togethers as observed by Elvis Costello St Stephen's Day Murders Party Party The World And His Wife When I Was Cruel No 3 (Wedding) ...

Bassey/Bombastic ballads
As I mentioned in another thread, having seen Shirley Bassey the other week, I couldn't help imagine her doing God Give Me Strength. I wonder if you could get a whole album of Bassey does Costello? Songs with massive choruses, that fit her bombastic style. Another would be Still Too Soon To Know, I ...

There's something so vile about the paps taking pics of a dad just taking his kids for a stroll. Ugh!
In other news, Elvis has ditched the 'tache! Good move, Elv! It's his optimum look, I reckon!

Take a look at this story about Peter Gabriel and tell me Elvis isn't involved somehow:

Re: Charlie Wood covers Elvis' Flutter And Wow
Sounds like a really nice cover - in fact, I can imagine this song becoming quite a popular love song, if enough people cover it. Actually, of Elvis's other material from the 2000s, what do you think could make a popular hit, and who would do good versions of them? Watching the Electric Proms Shirle...

Elvis Costello 'mash ups'
I've always thought 'Doll Revolution' could be 'mashed up' successfully with Madonna's Beautiful Stranger. Also, am sure the chorus of Tokyo Storm Warning could be mashed up with some sort of hip-hop song (not being an expert, I can't think of one). Any others you can think of?

In answer to bamboo needle's question: "Can anyone think of any instance(s) where Faragher's playing rises above just being his regular perfunctory style?" - erm, how about Spooky Girlfriend? His amazing, jumpy, jackrabbitting bass is the so central to that song. Also, Tart, on the same al...

Watch 1930s and 1940s Cary Grant and Fred Astaire films. Also, Laurel and Hardy films. It's impossible to find life unbearable when you're watching them. That's all I'm gonna say on this!
