Re: Ballad of Reading Gaol

Am I barking up the wrong tree? Yes! Dear Sarah - In this Irish film from 1990 EC sings 2 verses from Oscar Wilde's poem "Ballad Of Reading Gaol". The song is set to the tune of "Raglan Road" and the music is credited as being composed, arranged and directed by Fiachra Trench. T...

Ballad of Reading Gaol

Sorting through some old videos the other day and came across a clip of this at the end of some film or other.. A song that nobody mentions and oddly there is no mention on the wiki. The song appears to have been professionally recorded and features Oscar Wilde's words to the melody of Raglan Road. ...

Re: Welcome To The Voice: Elvis in Steve's opera, Paris, nov '08

This has received some press coverage in Spain, focusing on the role of Spanish soprano Silvia Schwartz. http://www.diariovasco.com/20081120/ultima/cantar-sting-costello-20081120.html Summarising briefly, Schwartz says that it was a gift from god to be given the role, and is still pinching herself. Re: Elvis Costello's Record Collection

I've been chipping away at this project still, and is now up to 31 discs and probably as complete as it's likely to get. From Peggy Lee's Siamese Cat song, performed when still a nipper to Don't Fence Me in (performed this month) I've included songs that EC didn't necessarily sing, but played backin...

Re: EC Portsmouth Guildhall April 12 1978

This is the show where Elvis opens by playing the first few (new or seldom played) songs solo. Apparently Nick Lowe was delayed getting to the venue. Phil Lynott is not formally introduced on version I've heard. (?) The show is interesting enough, for the unusual set list but it's ruined by the wanke...

Re: 10 year anniversary of "Painted From Memory"

No plans to re-issue the album yet? it must be due for it's first re issue now since it's been 10 years. Apart from obvious contenders for an expanded edition, such as "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" and "She", it would be interesting to compile some of the Bacharach covers from ...

Re: Printing artwork

At the risk of sounding too simplistic, why not save the images to your computer before printing? Then you can edit/resize as much as you like using any program you want. Microsoft word is as good as anything! I usually find you need to add a touch of brightness. Check the size and print. Bingo

Re: Elvis gets honorary degree, Liverpool 2008

Elvis deserves his doctorate for having to sit through that ceremony. Applauding a list of names for an hour. I was exhausted just watching. As for the dvd, I think I'd prefer to read the telephone directory, you can get through it quicker and don't have to applaud each name. I believe that Costello...

I had a go at translating this piece, I usually charge for this but this was fun. However the article isn’t nearly as interesting nor hilarious as the google translation above. I particularly enjoyed: changed his guitar as if it were spoon. There used to cook hat some preferred to go out with navy b...

Here's a more comprehensible translation. Obviously, without the original transcript it's impossible to know exactly what was said , but I had a go... "Vinyl is better; They’ve been cheating us with CDs for more than 20 years.” FERNANDO NEIRA - Madrid - 10/06/2008 A few months ago he made alarm...

Re: Elvis Costello's Record Collection

OCDish but fantastic. Yeh. I suppose so, but by listening to the bands that have influenced EC I've discovered a whole world of great music. There's bound to be a lot of debate about different versions and what to include or not. "It's a big can of worms" as someone said to me. I have a l...

Re: Elvis Costello's Record Collection

This project is almost complete and covers up to 2008. I'm still missing some titles (in Bold) and welcome any info regarding ommissions. Criteria for inclusion is: 1 any cover version performed by EC including medley segments and brief quotations. 2 usually only one version is included , if not the...

As I live very close to Bilbao,I'm watching this topic very closely for confirmation of this event. No mention in my local sources here, BBK, local press etc. neither does anything appear on EC or The Police websites. I suspect EC will NOT be appearing (with The Police) in Europe as the dates do ind...

Always pleases me when someone "discovers" an album. More so, if they like it, as you seem to do. It is a pretty strong album. Oddy enough though I prefer the demo version of Favourite Hour. It has something that the album version lacks...The live version from MFBB rectifies this slightly ...

Elvis Costello's Record Collection

I need some help compiling this collection of all cover versions performed by EC. I have most of it sketched out and it contains over 400 songs. There's a...
